LUCKNOW: With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, the state government is reportedly considering a major financial assistance scheme aimed at strengthening women’s economic independence and potentially influencing the women’s vote bank. Under the proposed initiative, more than 50 lakh women could receive financial assistance of up to ₹50,000 each.
According to the proposal being discussed within the government, eligible women may initially receive ₹20,000 before the elections. If the BJP returns to power after the polls, the remaining amount could be distributed in three instalments of ₹10,000 each. Deliberations regarding the proposed scheme have reportedly begun, although a final decision on its implementation is yet to be announced.
The proposed initiative comes against the backdrop of the BJP’s electoral strategy following its strong performance in the Bihar Assembly elections last year. The party had introduced a financial assistance initiative for women in Bihar, under which ₹10,000 was transferred to eligible beneficiaries before the elections. The Uttar Pradesh government is now considering a similar approach, with a larger financial assistance package.
Focus on women’s economic empowerment
The Yogi Adityanath-led government has reportedly intensified preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections. Amid changing political dynamics and the growing importance of younger voters, the government is examining schemes that could appeal to different sections of society.
The proposed women-centric initiative is being considered not merely as a cash assistance programme but also as a measure to promote self-employment and economic self-reliance among women. The Women Welfare Department is expected to play a key role in framing and implementing the proposed scheme.
The government is considering providing financial assistance of ₹50,000 to eligible women, which could help beneficiaries meet household requirements, start small businesses or pursue avenues of self-employment.
Priority for economically weaker sections
The proposed scheme is expected to give preference to women belonging to socially and economically disadvantaged sections. Women from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, families living below the poverty line and economically weaker households could be among the primary beneficiaries.
Sources indicate that the eligibility criteria may also cover women from families with annual incomes of up to ₹12 lakh, although the final income limit and other conditions are yet to be formally decided.
Could become an electoral game-changer
Within government circles, the proposed scheme is being viewed as a potentially significant electoral initiative. Direct financial assistance to women has emerged as an important component of political strategies in several states, with governments using such programmes to build stronger connections with female voters.
Similar cash-assistance schemes have been implemented in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar, where the BJP-led governments benefited politically from women-focused welfare measures.
With Uttar Pradesh being one of the country’s most politically significant states, a large-scale financial assistance programme for women could become an important part of the BJP’s election strategy. However, the proposed scheme is still under consideration, and its final structure, eligibility conditions and implementation timeline will depend on decisions taken by the state government.
