NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Rajya Sabha MP and national general secretary Vinod Tawade as its in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, giving him a crucial organisational role as the party begins preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections. Jagdish Ishwarbhai Patel has been named co-in-charge of the politically significant state.
The appointments were announced a day after BJP president Nitin Nabin unveiled a revamped national organisational team featuring a combination of experienced leaders and relatively new faces in important party positions. With Uttar Pradesh scheduled to hold its next Assembly elections in 2027, the latest organisational changes are being viewed as an important part of the BJP’s strategy to strengthen its preparations well ahead of the polls.
Tawade’s appointment assumes particular significance given the political importance of Uttar Pradesh, which sends the largest number of members to the Lok Sabha and has traditionally played a central role in national electoral politics. Who is Vinod Tawade?
A senior BJP leader from Maharashtra, Vinod Tawade has built extensive experience in both electoral and organisational politics over several decades. He is currently among the BJP’s eight national general secretaries and was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra in April 2026.
Tawade has also held ministerial responsibilities in the Maharashtra government led by Devendra Fadnavis. During his tenure, he served as Minister for Higher and Technical Education as well as Minister for Cultural Affairs.
His political career has included several important organisational assignments within the BJP. Over the years, he has been associated with election planning, campaign management and coordination of party activities in different states. His experience in handling organisational responsibilities and election-related strategies is considered an important factor behind the party’s decision to place him in charge of Uttar Pradesh.
The BJP’s latest appointments indicate that the party is beginning to place greater emphasis on organisational planning in states where major electoral battles are approaching.
